It’s been a fast, but long one.
Had the hankering to get back into some one design sailing after a focus on big boat sailing over the last few years. My wife Bridget and I raced two handed Snipes for many years in our 20’s, along with just a bit of other sailing.
Had no clue what a Flying 15 was, but heard about this time last year that the Worlds were coming to Napier. Enough for us to take action, saw one, bought one, easy as.
Went to our first weekend regatta and promptly tied for last (but got it on a count back…yippie!). Long drive home debating whether to drop kick this middle aged return to one design, or sort our stuff and crack on. We chose the latter.
The 15 fleet at Royal Akarana Yacht has been awesome. Friendship at every turn and an eager willingness to share decades of worldwide experience to help get us up to speed. Speaks volumes about the culture that RAYC embraces across its wide variety of water related programs.
Bridget can’t make the nationals/pre worlds so I have enlisted the help of Live Sail Die editor, and Aussie legend, Suellen (Hurling) Davies to keep me on track. Any photos of us with me wearing earplugs have NOT been photoshopped!
Napier Sailing Club has pulled out all the stops to put on a world class event. Looking forward to a great couple of weeks in a fantastic spot.
So just about to jump in the Boatspray ute, and head for the start line. Will update over the next two weeks as things unfold!
