Day 5 update from the race course

Another beautiful day in Napier with clear blue skies and 7 to 12 knots of wind and short chop.

Race 6 of the 2017 Lexus Flying 15 Worlds got underway on the third attempt. The first one was abandoned by the race committee when the wind flicked left shortly prior to the start. The second failed attempt was because almost everybody preferred to be on the course side when the gun went. This fleet is very good at that!

Steve Goacher from GBR again showed his class to lead from start to finish. He is in very good shape for a fourth World Championship title with one race to go.

The Jerwoods from Western Australia have emerged as the only real threat for first place. Matt Owen and Andrew Reed from Canberra (who won the pre-World regatta) are in third place.

Local heroes, Hayden Percy and Scott Pedersen have put together an outstanding regatta to be sitting in fourth place in Fflorin, a silver boat. Close behind them are Dave McKee and Mal Hartland from GBR sailing Fiery Chariot and Murray Gilbert and Jon Burgess in Ffrenetic from RAYC, Auckland. Plenty of other boats are breathing down their necks including former world champion Charles Apthorp, sailing with Alan Green in Foof from GBR.

The competition is extremely close all the way through the fleet and there is still plenty of opportunity for significant movement up and down the leader board. Last race is scheduled to start at 10.00 am tomorrow.
